Most people meet this shoe under a name that costs four figures. Maison Margiela's Replica made the silhouette famous, but it didn't make it first. The German Army Trainer began as the BW-Sport, adidas' indoor trainer for the Bundeswehr in the 1970s: plain, unbranded, built for soldiers and nothing more. When Margiela walked it down the runway in 1998, it was surplus pairs of this shoe on their feet, years before the house made its own.
 
The adidas BW Army is that original, drawn back out of the archive. A premium leather base with real depth, suede overlays worn soft at the edges, a leather lining that gives a little more with every wear. No three stripes, because a shoe built for the army had nothing to sell.
